The ModelMaker MMDx handheld laser scanners are ideally suited for portable 3D inspection and reverse engineering applications. Their camera technology is a major leap forward in 3D laser scanning as they offer high frame rates and large stripe widths up to 200mm for ultra-productive scanning. MMDx incorporates Enhanced Sensor Performance (ESP3) to scan all sample materials and surface finishes without user intervention.
The digital camera technology offers a measuring accuracy down to 7 microns and benefits from a true non-interpolated resolution of more than a thousand points per stripe, allowing freeform surfaces and features to be scanned accurately and efficiently.

The scanner’s digital cameras benefit from a true (non-interpolated) resolution of over 1.000 points per stripe, providing optimum resolution for scanning freeform surfaces and features efficiently.
Tactile measuring of soft and fragile parts potentially yields inaccurate measurements or can cause surface marks. As laser scanning technology is entirely non-contact, there is no risk for damage or inaccurate measurement.
Part-to-CAD inspection compares the acquired point cloud with nominal CAD data, resulting in easy-to-interpret geometric deviation displays. Freeform surface inspection is ideal for studying material springback and shrinkage phenomena to ensure that the shape of the part is within geometry specifications. Focus extracts geometric features highly accurately, thanks to the thousands of measurement points captured by the scanner. This multitude of points allows the software to apply very accurate line fitting to determine the exact position and orientation of a wide range of features.
Reverse Engineering quickly creates CAD surface models from individual point clouds using a straightforward workflow. Reverse engineering is typically applied when original CAD data is missing, to create CAD from handmade clay models, to update designs, or as input for rapid prototyping of freeform parts and products. For reverse engineering applications users can select from a broad offering of 3rd party packages which tightly integrate all Nikon Metrology handheld scanners.
ESP3 incorporates dynamic point-by-point adaptation of the laser intensity. This capability allows different surface materials, finishes and transitions between various materials to be scanned without user interaction, eliminating manual parameter tuning and part spraying altogether. ESP3 is a key differentiator when scanning similar parts in different manufacturing stages; initially dealing with bare sheet metal parts and finally scanning finished products finished in any color.
Measuring soft and fragile parts with tactile methods potentially induces inaccurate measurements or can mark the surface. As laser scanning technology is entirely non-contact, there is no risk of damage or inaccurate measurement due to part indentation.
Focus supports intuitive inspection using an articulated arm or Optical CMM with tactile and/or scanning probes. The software is specifically designed to easily control data flows with minimum user interaction. Customers can complete handheld data acquisition and inspection jobs from within Focus without compromising performance.
Alternatively, through the Nikon Metrology API, the ModelMaker handheld scanners and MCAx arms or Optical CMM can be used directly in many 3rd party inspection software applications, including PolyWorks® and Geomagic®. For reverse engineering applications users can select from a broad offering of 3rd party packages which tightly integrate with all Nikon Metrology handheld scanners.
